UNIVERSITYOF MAINE AT FARMINGTON COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, HEALTH AND REHABILITATION
LESSON PLAN FORMAT Teacher’s Name: Bethany MarshallDate of Lesson: 1 Grade Level:9thTopic: Drug Prevention Objectives Student will understand that that drug and alcohol abuse harm our bodies in many different ways. Student will know different consequences they will face if they chose to abuse drugs and alcohol. Student will be able to analyze the side effects if drug and alcohol abuse. Maine Learning Results Alignment Maine Learning Results: Health Education & Physical Health Education -A. Health Concepts A6. Basic Health Concepts Grades 9-Diploma Students analyze complex health concepts related to family life, nutrition, personal health, safety & injury prevention; and tobacco, alcohol, & other drug use prevention.
Rationale: This lesson supports the Maine Learning Results by having students do research on tobacco and alcohol. They will be learning the different side effects of these drugs and it will help teach students why they should not abuse drugs or alcohol. Assessment Formative (Assessment for Learning) Throughout this lesson I will know that students have learned from a few different things. Students are going to be asked to work in pairs and do research on a specific type of drug. They are asked to find out specific information about their drug and interview someone that has had experience with the drug such as a doctor or a user. Students will then be asked to present their research in a blog and present what they found to the class. I will use the student’s blog and presentation to gather evidence on what they have learned throughout this assignment. Students will also be asked to take part in a discussion at the beginning of class on why drugs and alcohol are bad and they think that people use them and then abuse them. This class discussion will allow me to see what students already know and then after completion of the assignment, what they have learned. Summative (Assessment of Learning) Students will be assessed on their interview and blog through a rubric which I will provide to students at the beginning of the class. Students will be asked to follow this rubric and will receive a total amount of points out of 30. I will also be assessing students by their participation in the class discussion. Students will also be asked to comment on each person’s blog and share something that they learned from that team’s presentation. This assessment meets the objectives and the MLR because students will be presenting side effects of drugs and the consequences for using their drug. Integration Verbal: Students will be presenting in front of the class and will be asked to speak clearly and loud enough for everyone to hear. This will give students with high verbal skills the opportunity to use this learning strategy. Writing: Students will be writing blogs and interviews on the information they found about their drug and these blogs are expected to be well written with no grammar or spelling mistakes. Technology: At the beginning of the class I will be showing students videos on drug and alcohol abuse as well as pictures of before drug use and after. Students will be using the internet to find research on their drug and to blog about their drug as well. Students will also be asked to comment on one another's blog by sharing something that they learned about their classmate’s drug. Groupings Students will be working on this project in pairs. I will give every student a list of drugs which they will be doing research on and each student will be asked to pick the top 3 drugs that they are interested in learning about. I will then do my best to pair up the people who had similar interests on a specific drug. Students will then work together to find research, create a blog and to present their information to the class. Each pair will receive a grade out of 30 on their interview and blog. Students are asked to do an even amount of research and talking for their presentations. I will make it clear to the class that all students are expected to do an equal amount of work. If a pair is experiencing a problem with this, they will be asked to see me so we can solve the problem. Differentiated Instruction Strategies Interpersonal: Students will be given the opportunity to work with a fellow classmate as well as to interview someone. This will allow them to work with other people meeting the standards of an interpersonal student. Linguistic: Students are being asked to write interview questions and to write a blog on what they have learned. Intrapersonal: Students are asked to reflect on why they wouldn't or would want to use drugs and then reflect on why they think other people would want to use drugs. Bodily-Kinesthetic: Students will be given the opportunity to get up and get a laptop in order to do research on their drug. This will give students the chance to move around and get out of their seat for a bit. Logical-Mathematical: This will be met when students are asked to think about why people use drugs and what they believe their logic behind it is. Verbal: Students will be given the opportunity to present what they learned about their drug and present their interview. This allows students to speak to the class and participate in a discussion. Modifications/Accommodations I will review students IEP, 504s and ELLIDEP and make the appropriate modifications and accommodations. If a student cannot complete this assignment due to personal reasons I will provide them with an alternative assignment. If a student is absent they will be expected to see me upon their return to school. I will go over the class discussion we had during class and present them with the crossword puzzle on drug and alcohol. I then explain to them what their assignment is and ask that student if they would like to join a group or to complete the assignment alone. If a student would like to join an already existing group they will be expected to go ask the other group members if they can join and find a way to participate and help the group out. If they chose to work alone I will provide them with a drug to research and expect them to complete the same assignment as the class. Extensions I will be providing students with a crossword puzzle on drug and alcohol abuse. (Type I) With this students will participate in a quick discussion about what they already know about drug abuse and what kinds of peer pressure they face when it comes to these types of things. I will then show students a few clips on substance prevention as well as some teen facts. (Type II) I will then have students do research on the drug which they have been assigned (Type II) and interview a person with experience on that drug. Students will presenting the information they found on a blog. Student’s blogs will also be asked to contain some external links in order to show videos, pictures and any other sites which they chose. (Type II) and all students will be asked to comment on their fellow classmates blogs (Type II). By using both these type I and type II technologies I will be able to meet the needs and standards of all students. Materials, Resources and Technology Rubric checklist
